Like many other horse lovers, I mistakenly thought horses were not slaughtered in the United States. That practice had ended in 2006 when the US plants were mandated to close. I was shocked to learn the same number of horses were slaughtered each year, but now endured long journeys to Canada and Mexico with no food, water or rest before their final ending.
Each year over 150,000 horses ship across US borders for slaughter. There is no end in sight. Many had hoped that the SAFE Act would end the suffering, but with the recent change in the political infrastructure, it will be years before the SAFE Act is brought before legislators again.
Even if the SAFE Act does pass, there is no assurance this will stop the transport of horses to slaughter. When legislators closed the US plants, killbuyers began shipping horses to the plants that were still open outside of the USA. Did the killbuyers outsmart lawmakers once? And is it possible they could outsmart them again?
There are 6 meat auctions in the USA. Why can’t they just move these auctions over the borders and claim “Horses are shipping to Auctions?” While the SAFE Act will make it unlawful to ship horses to slaughter, it would remain lawful to ship to auction.
I don’t have any answers – I watch the video below and continue the battle, not sure when the war will ever end…..
