Should you care about Email Marketing?

YES.  From what I know and what I have experience, Email Marketing is not dying…nor will it die anytime soon.  Its important to note that direct mail still is the big winner as far as response rates.  Yes, Direct mail = as in snail-mail using the post office and a mailbox at the end of the driveway….

But if you have a list, or can collect a list of your followers, it is cost effective (and maybe even free) to send email to prospects.  It won’t be free if you use services like Constant Contact or iContact.  It will be free if you use options like CakeMail.com.  However, be warned, you get what you pay for when it comes to Internet cloud services.

The second issue you will run into is Opt-In/Opt-Out and solicitation.  iContact requires you to send a confirmation email to your contacts before you can send any communication emails.  I believe strongly that you only have so many “at-bats” when it comes to your followers opening emails.  So, I chose not to use iContact and waste a communication opportunity with my contacts.

Constant Contact takes a slightly different approach.  They are the email police.  If you send out an email and too many people opt-out, or too many email addresses don’t work, the email police at Constant Contact will put you in an “Email Time Out.”  The worst part is Constant Contact will continue to collect their fees while you are in that email time out.

You can expect to pay between $20-$30 for lists under 2000 and over $40 per month for larger lists.  If you have a budget, there is CakeMail and Mailchip.  These options are inexpensive or even free for small lists (under 2000).   They really don’t monitor what you do or where your list came from.  However, you get what you pay for in that the interface and templates are less desirable.  Further, if you need help, too bad.

Hope that helps….
